Shepherds Crook GSD is located in a "mountainous" (by Great Plains standards) area of southeastern Oklahoma, just a short drive away from Ft. Smith, Arkansas. We reside on forty acres along with our dogs and quarter horses, giving a Shepherds Crook German Shepherd Dog plenty of room to run, play, and train. We also go to great lengths to assure our dogs are kept in clean, healthy, and protective kennels.
Lack of exercise is not a problem at Shepherds Crook. Our dogs have a large acreage to expend their energy on. Our several large, lush green pastures provide plenty of room to play fetch, track, train in obedience, and protection. As if that isn't enough, we also have a relatively large lake behind our property that allows us to take the dogs out for long walks, or a nice swim in the water during the summer months.
Although they do not directly interact with our horses and cattle, all of our dogs and puppies have been exposed to livestock and are trained to behave appropriately in their presence. Having been involved in barrel races and rodeos ourselves, we at Shepherds Crook know the importance of having a well behaved canine companion around other animals.
Our kenneling facilities are climate controlled and cleaned daily to ensure the comfort and well being of our dogs. Our whelping boxes are placed indoors so they can be quickly accessed by either one of us, and puppies and their mother are kept warm by built-in heat producing lights. Puppies born at Shepherds Crook do not touch their paws to the ground outside until they have received all necessary vaccinations and are completely healthy, and visitors and guests to our facilities are asked to clean their hands and shoes before interacting with young puppies. As they grow older (around seven or eight weeks of age), puppies are let out into the yard daily to allow them to experience the wonders of the world from the safety of a controlled space. We also allow the puppies to begin playing in the water, by placing out a small kiddie pool for them to splash around in. Puppies are constantly supervised, unless they are in their kennels or the whelping box, in which case they are still checked on very often.
